This two day course is designed to take you through the fundamentals of winter driving and will allow you to get a feel for a car outside its normal day to day limits. Improve your driving ability in general and specifically in low friction, wet or snowy situations.
You will learn valuable skills from our experienced instructors who have structured each session carefully to provide a safe and practical learning environment delivering fun and action packed day.
Use auto industry development techniques to learn to drive in low surface friction situations. Low friction surfaces offer the best possible, low impact handling training opportunities. Experience high slip, high skid situations in a safe and professional environment, and learn how to handle them!

COURSE PROGRAMME
Day 1
Welcome & Introduction and morning tea Starting at 0900 sharp you will be introduced to our experienced team here at SHPG, you will then be taken through the plan for the day, safety restrictions, and basic vehicle dynamics concepts you will need to know for the day. Also a delicious espresso coffee served with a freshly baked muffin & fresh fruit
Acceleration and Braking Exercises The instructors will take your for a hands on practical session experiencing acceleration and braking exercises on the snow flat. Learn maximum acceleration and braking control.
Initial Autocross Exercise- Using a professional GPS and accelerometer based data logger we will time and track your initial performance and skill level on the autocross cone course on the snow flat. Test your skills through the hairpin, lane change, slalom, and increasing decreasing radius turns.
Lunch Once back into the warmth and comfort of SHPG lodge you will be served with your choice of either: A piping hot hearty lunch from our restaurant buffet selection Or A specially designed three course lunch menu for you to choose from, this can include Salmon, Venison, Lamb & Beef options and a sweet to finish. Lane change and slalom exercise Using automotive industry evaluation techniques learn methods for turning and accident avoidance in low surface friction situations. Double lane change and slalom courses will be used to combine turning and acceleration and braking techniques for maximum handling capability. Afternoon tea Time to warm up again with some more delicious hot drink options from our lodge cafe, this time served with a yummy savoury snack
Autocross Exercise Put it all together here and see how the exercises add up to increase your ability to safely and quickly negotiate a road course.
Day's End Head down the mountain for an evening of fine dining or relaxation in Wanaka. Dinner with staff and instructors can be arranged for groups of 4 or more interested in talking shop.
Day 2
Classroom time and morning tea More vehicle dynamics concepts you will need to know for the day and preview of exercises. Also a delicious espresso coffee served with a freshly baked muffin & fresh fruit
Skid Circle and Shifting Exercises Now that you have a feel for it. Practice vehicle control manoeuvres on the packed snow skid circle. You will learn throttle and deceleration effects as well as over steer and under steer control techniques. Also put the accel and braking techniques you've learned together to learn heel-toe shifting and cornering techniques.
Lunch
Autocross Now we will try to give everyone ample time on the autocross course to improve your skills have an instructor ride along and prep for the final exam. Then you will compete with the most difficult adversary out there - yourself. Your final laps will be recorded and printed out for easy comparison to your first. You decide how far you came in just two days.
Review, Reward, Relax & refresh We then review what we have learned, compare notes, arrange photos, and hand out course completion certificates. We will arrange computer print outs with lap times, acceleration charts, and timing information for you to analyze.
